NEWPORT, R.I. - Freshman center #Pat Flanagan# (Somerville, Mass.) scored 17 of his team-high 21 points in the second half as Roger Williams University overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Salve Regina University, 69-66, in a non-league matchup in Newport.
Roger Williams (3-3), despite racing out to a 6-0 lead with three layups in the first minute, found itself trailing by three at the break (30-27). Salve Regina sophomore Windell Hinkson (Groton, Conn.) paced the Seahawks for the second straight game with 22 points. His two first-half 3-pointers broke ties including the latter with 33 seconds left in the period. Hinkson scored on a layup in the opening minute of the second half for Salve Regina's (2-4) largest lead, 32-27.
But the Hawks responded quickly with consecutive 3-pointers from senior #Billy Barrett# (Fairfield, Conn.) and sophomore #Travis O'Dell# (Brunswick, Maine) and never trailed again. Barrett, who finished with 20 points, hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game with 12:49 remaining for the Hawks' largest lead, 54-42.
Salve Regina outrebounded the visitors (33-28), but Roger Williams enjoyed the edge at the free-throw line (14 to 4 in free throws made).
Hinkson fed freshman Michael Dylag (Southbury, Conn.) with a pass in the lane and the 6'6” center made it a two-point game with a layup (68-66). After senior forward #Ryan McGinn# (Plattsburg, N.Y.) made one of two free throws for the Hawks, Dylag grabbed the rebound with nine seconds left for a game-tying attempt for Salve Regina. Senior Justin Woodworth (Ipswich, Mass.) hoisted a 3-pointer that fell short and #Kyle Bogucki# (Clinton, Conn.) collected the loose ball.
Salve Regina, who will play at Roger Williams in February for The Commonwealth Coast Conference matchup between the two schools, plays at in-state rival Johnson & Wales University on Thursday (8 p.m.). That game will be broadcast (tape-delayed) on Friday by Cox Sports Television (Ch. 3 between 8 and 10 p.m.). Roger Williams plays at Wheaton College on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
