BRISTOL, R.I. – RWU sophomore Phillip Kelly (Quincy, Mass.) defeated the top-ranked heavyweight in the nation, 6-3, Wednesday night during the Hawks' road match at MIT in Cambridge, Mass. The Hawks defeated MIT, 30-9, and also defeated Bridgewater State, 31-12.
Kelly earned the decision win over MIT senior Glenn Geesman (Aptos, Calif.), handing Geesman his first loss of the year after posting a perfect 25-0 record heading into Wednesday's match. His number one ranking came this year after posting a third-place finish as a junior at the 2008 NCAA Nationals.
RWU junior Robbie Crothers (Medford, N.Y.) also had a strong night, winning a 3-2 decision wrestling at 165 against Bridgewater State and winning a 2-1 decision wrestling at 157 against MIT.
Against Bridgewater State, sophomore Bennett Kissane (Tranquility, N.Y.) took on the Hawks' heavyweight duties, shutting-out his opponent, 8-0. Sophomore Nick Allegretta (Hackensack, N.J.) earned a win by fall wrestling at 165 against MIT and teammate Dan Woods (Demarest, N.J.) also earned a win by fall, defeating his Bridgewater State opponent at 197.
The two wins improve the Hawks' record to 12-5 and 3-1 in the Pilgrim League. The team returns to action at the NEWA Metro Conference Duals, hosted by Hunter College, Saturday.
