NEW LONDON, Conn. – Bringing four wrestlers into day two of the NCAA Division III Regional Championship, the Roger Williams University Wrestling team saw their season come to a close on Sunday, finishing 10th with a total of 50 points.
Springfield took the regional title with 170.5, with Williams finishing second behind the Pride with 155 points at the top of the regional tournament. Coast Guard rounded out the top three with a total of 152.5 points.
At 149 pounds, Matthew Castillo (Port Washington, N.Y.), after picking up a win by sudden victory to make it into the final eight, fell in his opening match to Western New England's James Linder. Castillo was then paired against Southern Maine's Shane Moore in the seventh-place match, taking a 13-3 win to close out his tournament.
Jack Forte (Westbury, N.Y.) then fell in his semifinals match to Peter Kane of Williams, setting up a match against Avery Carl of Bridgewater State. Forte held a 3-0 advantage, but Carl was able to take advantage of an opening flipping the match with a pin of Forte. Forte, slotted into the fifth-place match, fell to Vermont State University – Castleton's Nate Camiscioli, 11-0.
At 184 pounds, Joshua Nieroda (West Suffield, Conn.) opened his day with a 4-3 victory over Nicholas Baccala in his opening match, setting up a tilt against Springfield's Myles Leonard. Leonard came out on top before Nieroda fell to Johnson & Wales' Zachary Miller in the fifth-place match, placing sixth for the tournament.
Rounding out the tournament for the Hawks was Jayden Toppan (Gloucester, Mass.), who battled his way to day two, edging out WPI's Trevor Bowen in a tightly contested 3-2 match. The Hawks heavyweight, then opened Sunday with a win over Williams' Connor Reynolds, 8-2, before falling to Rory Nolan of Norwich, 7-1. After falling to the fifth-place match, Toppan was unable to compete, falling to sixth.
Roger Williams' season comes to a close for the 2025-26 campaign.
