NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass.- Junior forward Brandon Shelton (Cambridge, Mass.) made two free throws with 14 seconds remaining and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's basketball team overcame a five-point deficit in the final 1:40 of overtime and defeated visiting Roger Williams, 69-68 in a non-conference game at the Tripp Athletic Center Wednesday evening.
Shelton drove the lane, drew a foul from the Hawks' Travis O'Dell (Brunswick, Maine) and converted both free throws to put the Corsairs ahead, 69-68. RWU got the ball to Billy Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.), but his driving layup was blocked by Shelton and knocked out of bounds with four seconds remaining, The Hawks then got the ball to Barrett once more, but his shot just missed as the final horn sounded.
A three-point play by Kyle Bogucki (Clinton, Conn.) and O'Dell's layup staked Roger Williams to a 66-61 lead with 3:45 left in overtime. Shelton made two free throws, but O'Dell and Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) each made a free throw to stake the Hawks to a 68-63 lead with 1:40 left. Senior guard Reece Freeman (Cambridge, Mass.) converted a pair of free throws with 1:33 remaining, then junior forward Matt Walker's (Brockton, Mass.) basket with 49 seconds left drew UMass Dartmouth to within a point and set the stage for Shelton's free throws with 14 seconds remaining.
The Corsairs led at halftime, 31-29, and led, 61-56, with two minutes remaining, But Fava made a layup with 1:23 tio play, and Barrett drew a foul on a three-point attempt and made all three free throws with 17 seconds remaining to tie the game at 61 and send it into overtime.
Walked made eight of 16 shots from the field and led UMass Dartmouth with 20 points. Junior guard Jeff Macchi (Franklin, Mass.) added 14, while Shelton contributed 12. Barrett led the Hawks with 20 points, while Fava added 11.
Shelton and Macchi had six rebounds apiece for the Corsairs, while Bogucki had nine for RWU, which out rebounded UMD, 37-31. Macchi also had six steals as UMass Dartmouth forced 26 turnovers while committing 11. The Hawks made 23 of 42 shots from the field for 54.8 per cent, while the Corsairs were 27 of 70 for 38.6 per cent.
The Corsairs improved to 10-1 with the victory, while the Hawks dropped to 4-6 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Keene State in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader Saturday. Roger Williams will visit Nichols Saturday.
