WNEC upsets Women’s Soccer in shootout

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – #6-seeded Western New England College needed a shootout period to upset the #3-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Quarterfinals Saturday afternoon, advancing 4-3 in the shootout after a 2-2 in regulation.

Senior Kristen Culver (Westhampton, Mass.) netted the game-winning shot in the shootout period on the Golden Bears' fifth and final attempt. The stage was set for Culver's shot after sophomore Alexa Maher (Hopewell, N.J.) tied the shootout at three apiece on RWU's final attempt.

Senior Keeper Jessica Covino made a crucial save on the Hawks' fourth shot of the shootout, making a diving save to her right off of the shot by freshman Maddy Howard (Medfield, Mass.)

Western New England nearly had the game won in regulation after mounting a second-half comeback. Roger Williams sophomore Devon Leighton (Scarborough, Maine) put the Hawks on the board in the closing minutes of the first half, taking advantage of a Maher pass through the box that went by a couple of Golden Bear defenders and netting the short shot with 1:13 to play in the half.

Western New England would answer in the second half, as sophomore Andrea Almeida (Newington, Conn.) headed in a corner from junior Shannon Pescatello (Wethersfield, Conn.) to tie the game at the 68:43 mark. The Golden Bears grabbed the late lead with 12:08 to play on a goal by junior Heather Mortell (Webster, Mass.) off a short pass by sophomore Morgan Vogt (Henniker, N.H.).

It appeared that the Golden Bears would escape with the win at that point, until Pendleton sent the game into overtime in the final two minutes of the game, getting behind the WNEC defense and heading in a crossing pass from senior Carey Baldwin (West Hartford, Conn.) with only 1:43 left to play.

In the overtime periods, neither team could get much going offensively, as both squads combined for only four shots (3-1 RWU) in the twenty minutes of extra time. The scoreless periods setup the shootout period that ended in favor of Western New England.

Covino made six saves in 110 minutes of game time, while her Hawk counterpart stopped Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) stopped five shots on the day.

Western New England (9-8-2, 7-5-1 TCCC) will host #7-seeded Wentworth Institute of Technology, who upset #2 University of New England 2-1 earlier in the day. Roger Williams concludes the season with an overall record of 11-5-3 and 9-3-1 in the TCCC.
