BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball will go into the Thanksgiving break undefeated after defeating Connecticut College 76-59 Tuesday evening and extending its season-opening winning streak to four straight.
The Hawks jumped out of the gate, scoring the first four points of the game to spark an 18-1 run over the opening 4:30, highlighted by ten points by Gary Madison (Waterbury, Conn.) who went 4-4 from the field during the stretch.
Roger Williams held on to its double-digit lead for a majority of the first half before a three-pointer by Shavar Bernier (Dover, N.H.) made it a 30-21 game in favor of RWU with 5:16 to play in the period. His basket was part of a 10-0 Camel run that cut their deficit to two at the 2:54 mark in the first half. Yet Roger Williams would respond, scoring nine of the final 13 points in the period to take a 39-32 lead into the break.
Demetrius Porter (Virginia Beach, Va.) began the second half with a layup to bring Conn. College within five, which was followed by Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) knocking down a jumper for RWU. Both teams traded baskets for the next four minutes, until a Madison trey and Fava layup gave the Hawks a 52-38 lead with 14:15 to play, it's largest lead of the second half.
Connecticut College managed to climb back into the game, pulling within eight with just over seven minutes left, but a 16-2 run by Roger Williams put the game out of reach, going up 76-54 in the final four minutes of the game to secure the win.
Madison finished with a game-high 30 points with a career-high seven three-pointers in the game. Fava nearly had a triple-double for Roger Williams, going for nine points, nine rebounds, and 12 assists.
Bernier scored 18 for the Camels in the game along with six assists. Porter had 14 points and five rebounds for Connecticut College.
Roger Williams (4-0) will travel to Providence Saturday to take on local rival Rhode Island College for a 2:00 p.m. game. Connecticut College (1-2) will host Eastern Connecticut State University Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
