Men’s Basketball Wins Third Straight Over USCGA

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team won its third consecutive game over the visitors from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.  The Hawks held a nine point lead at the half and extended that lead to eleven to win by a final score of 71-60.

The two teams battled it out in the first half with both of them getting a shot at the lead with four lead changes and six ties in the opening frame.  With 10 minutes to play in the first half Brett Huntley (Massena, N.Y.) hit two in a row after Eric Hudson () knocked down one of his own as the visitors went on a 9-0 run to go up 21-15.  After a timeout the Hawks battled back and regained the lead when Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) put back a rebound and got fouled.  He would cash in on the “and one” opportunity by making his free throw.   This started a 17-8 run for the Hawks at the end of the half to put the home team up, 40-31.

In the second half the Hawks would open things up by extending their lead to 14 with 14:08 left to play.  The home team's lead would fluctuate between 10 and 15 points for the rest of the game as the Hawks defense kept the visitors in check and never allowed them to attempt a comeback.

Flanagan led the team, putting up big numbers in the paint.  He ended the game with 25 points, nine rebounds, two assists and a steal.  Gary Madison (Waterbury, Conn.) had an impressive game as well with 15 points, five rebounds and two steals.  Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.)led the team in assists with eight, as well as having six points and five rebounds.  For the visitors Huntley was the high scorer with 16 points and Adam Radtke (Valley City, Ohio) led the team in rebounds with six.  The Hawks outshot the visitors with 46.9% shooting from the field compared to the Bears 40%, as well as from behind the arc with 34.8% and 32.0% respectively.  Additionally, Roger Williams went 17-18 for an impressive 94.4% from the free throw line.

The Bears drop to 3-5 on the year while the Hawks extend their winning streak to three and improve to 7-1 on the season.  The USCGA will next be in action at Becker College on Tuesday.  The Hawks are also in action on December 8th as they travel to Wesleyan for the final game before the team takes a break from action until after New Year's.
