Last-second shot downs Men’s Hoops in TCCC Quarterfinals

WENHAM, Mass. -- Aaron Trigg's last-second jumper found the bottom of the net and gave Gordon College a 50-48 victory over the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team in the quarterfinals of TCCC Tournament.

With the game knotted at 48, and Gordon holding for the final shot, the game appeared headed for a likely overtime. However, Trigg drove the right baseline and lofted a one-hand runner from just behind the backboard. The improbable shot swished through the net, with 0.2 seconds remaining and sent the Gordon crowd into pandemonium.

The visiting Hawks of Roger Williams called timeout to set up and inbounds play but were unable to get a shot towards the basket.

The stunning finish was appropriate for a game that was close throughout. Like their conference matchup in January, this was another low scoring struggle featuring intense halfcourt defense and deliberate offensive possessions. Gordon jumped out to an early 16-8 lead behind the strong inside work of sophomore forward Greg Walker (12 points). The Hawks fought back, holding Gordon scoreless for the final 4:39 of the first half, and Ryan McGinn's layup in the last minute knotted the score at 22 going into intermission.

Gordon's offensive woes continued in the second half, and when Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) hit a jumper with 12:57 left, Roger Williams led 34-30. The Hawks continued to beat Gordon on backdoor cuts and they opened a 43-37 lead with 7:44 to go on another Fava layup. Trailing by 6, Trigg went to work, hitting a 3-pointer and a mid-range jumper to pull Gordon to within 2 at 46-44 with 6:00 to play. Both teams went scoreless for the next 3 1/2 minutes, before Fava sank a pair of free throws to put the Hawks up 48-44.

With the Scots needing a basket, Greg Walker sank a short jumper with 2:16 to go to pull the Scots within 48-46. Roger Williams ran the shot clock down to its waning seconds before center Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) missed a hook shot from close range. JT Himmelsten snagged the rebound and moments later Ben Gaskill picked up an offensive board and laid it in, to knot the score at 48 with 1:18 to play.

Hawks' guard Taylor Petruccelli (Stratford, Conn.) missed the front end of a one-and-one which would have placed Roger Williams in the lead, but Ryan McGinn (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) grabbed the offensive board. Roger Williams ran the shot clock down again, and with 31 seconds remaining, Fava's jumper rimmed out, setting the stage for Trigg's heroics.

With the victory, Gordon moves on to the conference semifinals, where they will face either #2 seeded Colby-Sawyer College or #7 seeded Wentworth.

Trigg led all scorers with 17 points while Gaskill added 14 and Walker had 12. Corey Fava led Roger Williams with 10 points.

The victory was Gordon's 20th of the season. Roger Williams finishes at 12-14 overall.
