BRISTOL, R.I. – Salve Regina University escaped with a win over the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team Wednesday evening, thanks to a buzzer-beating three-pointer by Windell Hinkson (Groton, Conn.).
Hinkson took the shot with a little over a second to go, shooting five feet from the three-point line and sinking the bucket as time expired, prior to being mobbed by teammates at center court.
The game-winner capped off a thrilling finish that saw five lead changes and two ties in the final four minutes of the game. The Hawks earned one of those lead changes with 2:55 to play, when Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) hit a pair of free throws to put RWU up by a slim 64-63 margin. Salve Regina came down the other end and regained the lead on a jumper by Justin Woodworth (Ipswich, Mass.) with 2:40 to play.
After missed jump shot by Flanagan, neither team was able to add more points to the board until Flanagan knocked down one of his two free throws with 1:04 to play. With the game tied at 65 apiece, the Seahawks had the opportunity to take the lead on a jump shot by Woodward that could not find the bottom of the net. Travis O'Dell (Brunswick, Mass.) grabbed the board, giving the Hawks the presumable final possession after a timeout.
With the game clock and shot clock nearly in sync, RWU wound the clock down to eight seconds before Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) drove into the lane for the go-ahead layup. His shot was met in the paint by Michael Dylag (Southbury, Conn.), who snatched the rebound and threw it ahead to Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.). Birrell found Hinkson on the extended elbow for the game-winning trey, his seventh of the night.
Hinkson finished with 25 points and four assists, with Woodworth adding 13 points. Jabreche Boyd (West Haven, Conn.) had a double-double with ten points and ten rebounds.
Flanagan ended with 21 points for RWU, with Tucker Bashaw (Williston, Vt.) adding 11 from the bench. Billy Barrett (Fairfield, Conn.) scored ten with three assists.
