Box Score
NEWPORT, R.I. - Hawk senior Brad Bolte (Augusta, N.J.) completed a five-match comeback with his three-set victory at No. 1 singles, propelling Roger Williams University to a 5-4 victory over Salve Regina University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference match.
Salve Regina (3-8; 2-2 TCCC) built a 3-0 lead with a couple of comebacks of its own in doubles. Junior Andrew Martin (Glastonbury, Conn.) and sophomore Trey Van Buskirk (La Jolla, Calif.) cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. Senior Collin Cunningham (Wethersfield, Conn.) and junior Steve Masso (No. Scituate, R.I.) rallied from down a break in their eight-game pro set at No. 3 doubles to win 8-5. Sophomore Charlie Normington (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and freshman Zachary Rosenfeld (Easton, Conn.) did the same thing at No. 2 doubles.
With six singles matches in action the Seahawk advantage grew to 4-0 when Masso finished with a straight-set win at No. 4 (6-2, 7-5). Three of the remaining five matches would be decided in third sets with Roger Williams taking all five decisions.
Freshman Ryan Kim (Port Washington, N.Y.) and junior Kyle Baker (Bolton, Conn.) were straight-set winners at No. 2 and No. 6, respectively. Freshman Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.), who had dropped his first set (6-2) at No. 3 singles, finished with a three-set triumph with 6-2,6-3 scores in the final two sets.
Salve Regina's Cunningham forced a third set after clinching the second with a 7-5 tiebreak score. Hawk sophomore Dan Kleitz (Wethersfield, Conn.) outlasted the Seahawk senior with a third-set tiebreak victory (7-2) and knotted the overall score at 4-all. Bolte and Martin were the only players on stage when the final act gave Roger Williams (8-6; 3-0 TCCC) its first victory over Salve Regina since March 31, 1996 and its first victory in Newport since April 22, 1991.
Salve Regina's loss marks its second straight in The Commonwealth Coast Conference after its league-record 68-match win streak came to an end with a 5-4 decision last Saturday at Colby-Sawyer. Salve Regina had won 15 straight against Roger Williams including most recently in the 2008 The Commonwealth Coast Conference championship match, 8-1, for the Seahawks' unprecedented seventh straight title.
Roger Williams travels to Colby-Sawyer for its next league match on Saturday while Salve Regina plays on the road against Wheaton College on Friday (4 p.m.).
