BRISTOL, R.I.- For the second-straight season, the Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team has advanced to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Finals, defeating the visiting Chargers of Colby-Sawyer College in Friday's Semifinal contest, 5-0. The Hawks have yet to drop a match during the 2009 postseason.
The closest match of the day featured Hawks sophomore Dan Kleitz (Wethersfield, Conn.) and freshman Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) facing sophomore Hart Callahan (Malvern, Pa.) and senior Ben Taylor (Derry, N.H.). The Hawks' duo battled to the eventual 9-8 (5) victory. RWU junior Kyle Baker (Bolton, Conn.) and senior Brad Bolte (Augusta, N.J.) won more decisively, 8-3, while senior Jeffrey Agonia (Lincoln, R.I.) and freshman Ryan Kim (Port Washington, N.Y.) also cruised to an 8-1 win.
In singles play, only two matches were needed to complete the sweep. Kleitz was able to defeat junior Bryan Racz (Stratton, Vt.), 6-0, 6-2, while Baker defeated freshman Chris Lavoie (Gorham, Maine), 6-1, 6-3.
Having earned the top seed in the postseason tournament with a perfect 9-0 TCCC record during the regular season, RWU will host the Finals Saturday at 1 p.m. at its home venue, Mt. Hope High School. The team will host Salve Regina, which advanced today with a 5-0 semifinal win over visiting Endicott College.
