Men’s Tennis Falls to Babson in Hard Fought Battle

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team lost a close one to visiting Babson College by a score of 5-4.  The Hawks jumped out to an early lead after the Doubles matches, ahead 2-1.  Babson then fought back and won four of the six singles matches on their way to the win.

In the #1 Doubles match Dan Kleitz (Wethersfield, Conn.) and David Lange (Great Neck, N.Y.) won against Austin Conti (Murray Hill, N.J.) and Artur Dutka (Teaneck, N.J.) by a score of 8-5.  The second pairing of Hawks, Spencer Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) and Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn.), were also victorious in a close one 9-8 (3-0 tiebreaker) over Justin Albert (Newton, Mass.) and Nissim Cohen-Sabban (Chula Vista, Calif.).  The #3 doubles match was won by the visitors, with the team of Brian Lafayette (Burlington, Vt.) and Zach Ringer (Minnetonka, Minn.) beating the pair from RWU, Suraj Pyla (Edison, N.J.) and Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.), by a score of 8-4.

The singles matches were a different story for the visitors as they were able to win four out of the next six.  Albert beat Lange in the #1 Singles match by scores of 6-4 and 6-0.  The #2 Singles match swung things back in favor of RWU as Erikson was able to defeat Conti, 6-1, 6-4.  RWU continued to gain momentum with the #3 match in which Kyle Baker (Bolton, Conn.) beat Babson's Lafayette by scores of 6-3 and 7-5.  The #4 Singles match was a hard fought battle between Withington and Cohen-Sabban, a battle that was won by Cohen-Sabban in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.  The #5 Singles match saw Danny Schneider (Littleton, Mass.) from Babson defeat Pacino, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.  The #6 Singles match was won by Dutka over Nicholas Hawvermale (Bethlehem, Conn.) by a score of 6-1, 1-6, 7-5.  After the singles matches were over the final score was 5-4 in favor of Babson College in a well-fought battle between two strong teams.

Babson College got their first win of the season starting off 1-0 while the Hawks drop to 1-1 in their second contest.

Next up for Babson is Salve Regina, who they will host on Friday at 3:30 pm.  The Hawks return to action on October 1st when they host Springfield College at 3:30 pm.
