Box Score 2 BRISTOL, R.I.- The RWU Hawks Volleyball Team suffered two 3-2 losses Saturday at Wheaton College. The hosts defeated RWU 15-13 in game five before RWU battled Trinity College into a fifth set, ending in a 15-11 loss for the Hawks.
RWU began the non-conference weekend slowly, dropping two close games to the host Lyons, 25-22 and 25-23. The team bounced back and rolled to victory in the next two games, winning 25-16 and 25-19. A battle ensued in game five with neither team leading by more than two points all the way up to a 13-13 tie. The Lyons took the next two points to finish the match.
Three Hawks posted double-digit kills in the match, including freshman
Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) with 15, sophomore
Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) with 11 and senior
Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y.) with 10. RWU freshman setter
Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) dished out a career-high 46 assists, while junior
Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) posted 25 digs. Freshman
Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) led RWU with five service aces and chipped in nine digs from the back row.
Thirty minutes after the five-set loss, RWU was back on the court facing Trinity College, currently ranked 13th in New England. The resilient Hawks bounced back from the earlier defeat to take game one in decisive fashion, 25-16. But the talented Trinity team responded to take games two and three, both by the score of 25-18. The back-and-forth battle ensued, with RWU earning the 25-19 game-four victory, forcing once again another fifth-and-deciding set.
The two teams traded points up to a 7-7 tie, when RWU tallied three straight to take the 10-7 lead. A side-out and strong serving put Trinity ahead 11-10, before RWU tied the game at 11-11. That however was the last point for RWU, as Trinity posted a 4-0 run, thus ending the Hawks' day, 0-2.
Junior
Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) posted a team-high .368 hitting percentage in the match with nine kills and just two errors on 19 swings, while Dolan registered a team-high 13 kills with just four errors in the match. Lebowitz recorded 36 assists along with three service aces and nine digs in five games, while Hurd's 19 digs led the team.
RWU returns to conference play Wednesday, when they play host to in-state rival Salve Regina University. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
