Women's Soccer gets first win of 2009 with shutout

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Sophomore forward Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.) scored the only goal of the game with just under 14 minutes remaining and The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's women's soccer team fell to visiting Roger Williams, 1-0, in their 2009 season opener at the UMD Athletic Complex Thursday afternoon.

 

Fusaro converted a pass from sophomore forward Noelle Marston (Kingston, Mass.) to the left of Corsair freshman goalkeeper Jen Warren (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Feehan HS) to break a scoreless tie in the 77th minute.

 

Warren made 10 saves in the second half in her first action for UMass Dartmouth.

 

“We hung in there,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Carla DeSantis. “Both of our goalkeepers played well.”

 

The Hawks outshot UMD, 16-6. Junior Tanya Braga (Hudson, MA/Hudson HS) played the first half for the Corsairs and made two saves, whole senior Jen Garside (Londonderry, N.H.) and freshman Kristen Darling (Weymouth, Mass.) each made two saves for RWU.

 

UMD fell to 0-1-0 with the defeat, while the Hawks improved to 1-1-0. The Corsairs will host City College of New York Saturday afternoon, while RWU visits Wellesley Saturday.
