BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team gave Salve Regina University its first Commonwealth Coast Conference loss of the season with a 3-0 win Wednesday evening.
“The group really played together as one on the court tonight, as opposed to six individuals, which helped get us the victory,” explained Head Coach Bret Stothart.
An hour and fifteen minutes was all the Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team needed to shut out Salve Regina University. The games ended with scores of 25-16, 25-21, 25-18, all in favor of RWU.
Kristina Dolan (Glenmont, N.Y.) and Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) killed more than half of their total attempts; Dolan led with 14 and Dion followed with ten. #Michaela Ross# (Old Bridge, N.J.) also had 11 kills to help in the match. Of the 75 points totaled, freshman Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) assisted on 43, three shy of her season high. Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) led the Hawks with 17 digs, notching one more than Megan Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass.) who led the Seahawks with 16.
Lisa Zabel (Madison, Conn.) assisted more than a fourth of the Seahawks' 55 points in the match with 14. Deanna Salter (Westwood, Mass.) led her team with seven kills, and teammate Julianne Barry (Randolph, Mass.) tallied six.
Roger Williams was up in game one until the tie at 5-5 when RWU and the Seahawks went point-for-point until Dolan made a kill and Roger Williams stayed up for good at 12-11. Salve Regina put up a harder fight in the second game ending 25-21, although there were only two ties beginning the game at 1-1 and 2-2. In the third game, the Seahawks jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but once Ross got Roger Williams' first kill at 1-5, the Hawks' score continued to rise via a 10-4 run to give them 10-9 lead that they would not give up.
Roger Williams (5-10, 3-1 TCCC) will compete against Regis College and Anna Maria College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference tri-match in Weston, Massachusetts Saturday, October 3rd. At 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Salve Regina (8-8, 2-1 TCCC) is playing a match at home against the Coast Guard Academy.
