MIDDLETOWN, Conn. –The wrestling team defeated Trinity College, 20-15, Friday in Middletown, Conn., following a 24-12 loss to host Wesleyan University. The split moves the Hawks' record to 7-3 on the season.
In the day's first match, RWU faced Wesleyan University, beginning with the 141 match. The teams traded decisions in the first two bouts before the Cardinals won three-straight bouts to take the 12-3 lead. RWU freshman Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) stopped the Wesleyan streak with a 5-4 decision in the 184 match before junior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.) earned a 3-1 victory at 197. RWU heavyweight Bennett Kissane (Tranquility, N.J.) registered a 3-2 win to tie the score at 12-12 with just two matches remaining.
Back-to-back pins by Wesleyan in the 125 and 133 bouts put an end to the RWU comeback and handed the Cardinals the 24-12 victory.
In the following match, Trinity jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two bouts, but two major decision wins by junior Anthony Cirello (Paramus, N.J.) and senior Kyle Rodgers (Danbury, Conn.) put RWU ahead 8-4.
The back-and-forth battle continued as Trinity won back-to-back decisions to move ahead 12-8. The teams traded decisions to move the score to 15-11 with just two matches remaining. Freshman Kaare Stokdal (Olive Bridge, N.Y.) gave RWU six points with a pin at 3:21 before junior Jeremiah Mahoney (Madison, Conn.) won by decision to give RWU the final victory, 20-15.
RWU returns to the mat Jan. 24 in Springfield, Mass. to compete in the New England Division III Dual Meet Championships beginning at 10 a.m.
