BRISTOL, R.I. – Gordon College overcame a ten-point deficit in the second half to defeat the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team in Commonwealth Coast Conference action by a final of 67-64 on Wednesday night.
Both the Hawks and the Fighting Scots had very solid offensive performances in the game. The Hawks shot 47.9% from the field and 50% from three-point range, while Gordon was 50% from the field and 76.2% from the free throw line. The matchup saw six lead changes with the scored tied twice ending with Gordon on top.
The Fighting Scots opened up the scoring on the game with a three-point shot from Aaron Trigg (Overland Park, Kansas) which was soon answered by a layup from RWU's Taylor Petruccelli (Stratford, Conn.). During the opening ten minutes the lead changed six times until a three-pointer from Travis O'Dell (Brunswick, Maine) gave the Hawks the lead which they held for the remainder of the first half. A layup from Gary Madison (Waterbury, Conn.) in the final seconds of the half gave the Hawks a three-point lead.
RWU came out in the second half with a 12-4 run to put them ahead by ten, their largest lead of the game. They held this until David Dempsey (Wallingford, Conn.) put up three consecutive two-point shots to cut the lead down to four. RWU battled for the majority of the second half to maintain the lead. In the last five minutes of the game, Gordon battled back until the Hawks' lead was down to only one with 1:40 left in the game. A foul by Petruccelli which caused him to foul out of the game shifted the momentum in favor of the Fighting Scots.
After a layup from Trigg with 25 seconds remaining, O'Dell missed a jump shot at what seemed to be the buzzer. However, a foul by Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) with 0.5 seconds on the clock gave RWU a chance to tie up the game. After a timeout, Fava passed to #Tom Rafael# (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) who turned to shoot the half-court three that sailed right, giving Gordon the win.
RWU's offense was led by Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) who put up 18 points along with Petruccelli with 11 and Madison with ten. O'Dell and Rafael also contributed with nine and seven points, respectively.
Greg Walker (Uxbridge, Mass.) led Gordon's offense with a game high 20 points. Other contributors towards the win include, Dempsey with 14 points along with Trigg who had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Roger Williams with a record of 9-7 looks to improve upon their conference record (1-3) with a matchup at New England College on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. The Fighting Scots (11-3, 4-0 TCCC) return home and look to remain undefeated in the conference against Curry College on Saturday at 4 p.m.
