BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team overcame the Colby-Sawyer 81-75 in their Commonwealth Coast Conference game Saturday after trailing by nine at the half.
The Hawks were down at one point by 14 in the first half, but they cut their deficit to nine before mounting their comeback in the second half. A strong offensive effort in the second period allowed Roger Williams to score 52 of their 81 points in the second half.
Colby-Sawyer opened the second half with a layup by Jason Chevrefils (Manchester, N.H.) and a three-pointer by Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) to extend the lead back to 14. Less than two minutes into the second half, Travis O'Dell (Brunswick, Maine) began Roger Williams' 8-0 run, bringing the team from 29-43 to 37-43. However, the Chargers built the lead back up to 11 over the next two minutes.
The Hawks chipped away at the lead until a three-point shot by Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) made it a 53-54 game in favor of Colby-Sawyer. As Fava went up for the shot, Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) fouled O'Dell, sending him to the line for two free throw shots that he knocked down to give Roger Williams its first lead of the half.
On the other end, Zach McBey (Franklin, N.H.) hit a jumper for Colby-Sawyer to give the Chargers a one-point advantage. On the Hawks' next possession, O'Dell was fouled and hit another two free throws that put RWU up for good. Roger Williams went up as much as seven before Colby-Sawyer brought it back to one as Jon Chaloux (Barre, Vt.) hit a three with 3:22 to play. Yet the Chargers could not come closer for the remainder of the game as Hawks held on for the win.
O'Dell was the game's leading scorer, scoring 17 points throughout. Matt Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) and Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) each added 15, while Fava scored 13.
For Colby-Sawyer, Bardaglio scored 16, playing in all 40 minutes of the game and Jon Chaloux (Barre, Vt.) was next in line in scored with 15 points and seven rebounds. Willis handed out six of the team's 18 assists in the game while scoring 12.
RWU (11-8, 3-4 TCCC) will compete against Salve Regina University next Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. in Newport, Rhode Island. Colby-Sawyer (11-8, 4-3 TCCC) will be back on the court Wednesday at 8:00 p.m. as well, playing Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts.
