Men’s Basketball sunk by deft shooting of UMass-Dartmouth

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I.A torrid shooting performance by the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth downed the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team, as the Corsairs scored their second-highest point total of the season in a 96-73 win over the Hawks.

The Corsairs shot 65.5 percent from the field, connecting on 36 of their 55 attempts, including 12 of 21 from three-point range. Every UMass-Dartmouth player but one scored at least two points in the game, with four players in double figures.

For Roger Williams, the Hawks had one of their best offensive performances of the season in spite of the hot shooting from the Corsairs. The 73 points scored in the game was the team's third highest output of the season, while shooting 29 of 54 from the field for 53.7%, their best field goal percentage of the year.

Brandon Shelton (Cambridge, Mass.) and Matt Walker (Brockton, Mass.) dropped in a couple of layups for UMass-Dartmouth to begin the game, followed by the Hawks' first basket, a short shot by Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.). At that point, the game quickly turned in the Corsairs favor, as they hit four of their next five shots in a 13-4 run that gave them a 17-6 lead with 14:12 to play in the period. Flanagan would lay up another shot to bring RWU within nine, but Alex Klepadio's (Bernardston, Mass.) putback off a missed jumper brought UMass-Dartmouth back up by 11 points.

The Corsairs maintained their double-digit lead throughout most of the first half before Travis O'Dell (Brunswick, Maine) drove down the left side for a two-handed flush that made it a 24-32 deficit for the Hawks with 6:28 to play in the period. Yet Shelton would answer on the other end with a layup of his own, giving the Corsairs another double-digit lead that they would not surrender.

Shelton led all scorers with 18 points to go along with four rebounds and four assist. Brandon Stephens (Dorchester, Mass.) added 14 points, six boards, and five assists, with Klepadio contributing 17 points off the bench, including a perfect 3-for-3 from downtown.

Flanagan just missed a double-double for the Hawks, scoring 16 points with nine rebounds. Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) had eight points and five assists in 30 minutes of action, while Mike Engemann (Red Bank, N.J.) and Joe Kane (Glenmont, N.Y.) chipped in with seven points each off the bench.

Roger Williams (8-4) enters TCCC play Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. matchup against Nichols College, while UMass-Dartmouth (7-4) hosts Little East opponent the University of Southern Maine Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
