Volleyball takes non-conference match over Lasell

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team got back on the winning track Tuesday evening with a 3-0 non-conference victory over Lasell College by the scores 25-21, 26-24, 25-17. The win sets a new mark for Head Coach Bret Stothart for most wins in a season. His previous high was 22 wins back in 2008.

The opening of the first set saw a back-and-forth battle between Lasell and Roger Williams, with both teams trading points over the first 10 minutes. Neither team led by more than two over the first 20 points, before a Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.) kill made it a 12-9 game. The Hawks would then go on a 12-5 run to make it 24-14 and pull within game point. Yet the Lasers stormed a strong comeback, taking advantage of some Hawk errors, along with timely kills by Megan Gobeille (Lincoln, R.I.) and Danielle Drapeau (Biddeford, Maine) to mount a 7-0 run. The Hawks would eventually end the comeback with a kill by Holly Hancock (Tilton, N.H.) to go up 1-0.

In the second set, the Hawks scored the first three points prior to a 4-1 Laser run capped off by an ace by Gobeille. Roger Williams would regain the lead and slowly building its advantage over Lasell. Eventually the Hawks would go up 18-14 and appeared poised to ease its way to a 2-0 lead, but similar to the first set, Hawk miscues and strong Laser kills would help undue the Hawk advantage. Points from Gobeille and Taylor Riley (Greencastle, Pa.), along with three Hawk attack errors helped swing the game to 21-19 in favor of Lasell. The Hawks would tie the game at 21 but kills by Gobeille, Drapeau, and a service ace by Meghan Crozier (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) helped make it a 24-22 match. Yet this time, the Hawks would mount a comeback of their own, scoring five straight points to hold off the Lasers 26-24.

The third set saw Roger Williams score the first two points before Lasell tied the game at three on a service ace by Gobeille. Both teams traded points on the following two rallies before the Hawks ran off a 7-0 run to jump out to an 11-4 lead and never look back. Trailing 21-10, Lasell brought it to with seven by taking four of the next six rallies, yet the Hawks would eventually close out the match, taking the game 25-17.

Dion, whose .389 hitting percentage is currently 19th in the nation among Division III players, improved her mark with a game-high 14 kills with only one error on 27 swings for a .481 clip. Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) handed out 39 assists to go along with 13 digs, four kills, and three service aces. Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) finished with 17 digs and two aces.

Drapeau had eight kills on 26 attempts without an error for Lasell, while Riley and Gobeille each finished with six kills. Crozier had 19 assists and ten digs for the Lasers, with Sarah Eisenberg (Westfield, Mass.) adding 16 digs and two assists.

Roger Williams (23-4) will hold its annual Dig Pink Match Thursday evening at 7:00 as the Hawks host the top-ranked team in New England in UMass-Boston. Lasell (9-16) will host Norwich University tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
