Women’s Soccer win streak halted at 11

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – Two first-half goals helped Wesleyan University snap an 11-game win streak for the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team, as the Cardinals defeated the Hawks 2-1 Monday afternoon.

Wesleyan wasted little time putting a mark on the scoreboard, as the Cardinals scored on their first shot of the game in the second minute. Barrie Lindsay (Ipswich, Mass.) fed Hillary Biggs (West Newbury, Mass.) a short pass to the right side of the box, which Biggs then converted into a score, sending a shot to the left corner of the goal to put Wesleyan up 1-0.

In the 37th minute, Wesleyan added a second goal to increase the lead to two. This time, Amy Toig (Palo Alto, Calif.) received a pass from Lindsay on the left side of the box, chipping a short shot over the head of Hawk keeper Kelsey McGee (Kings Park, N.Y.) to give Wesley and two-goal lead. Less than four minutes later, Toig nearly added her second score of the game, sending a shot to the right side that rolled just past the post.

Roger Williams, who only put up two shots in the entire first half, came out firing in the second period, tallying 15 shots in the half. The Hawks kept Cardinal keeper Clare Colton (Montclair, N.J.) busy in net, needing to make six saves in her 45 minutes of action.

It would not be until the 75th minute for the Hawks' persistence to pay off, with Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) scoring the first goal of the game for RWU. Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.) sent a cross over the box to Noelle Marston (Kingston, Mass.) on the left side. Marston fired at Colton, who made a good save but could not keep it in her possession before Noel found the loose ball for the rebound goal.

That goal would be the only score RWU would notch on the board, as the Wesleyan defense held on for the win, earning the Cardinals' first win in four games.

Grace Bomann (Fairfield, Conn.) needed only one save in the first half to earn the win before being relieved by Colton. McGee made five stops for Roger Williams in the loss.

Roger Williams (13-4-0) closes out the regular season Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. game against Regis College, while Wesleyan (4-4-4) hosts Connecticut College Friday at 3:00 p.m.
