Women’s Soccer blanks Gordon to advance to TCCC Semis

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – A goal in each half helped the top-seeded Roger Williams University Women's Soccer advance to The Commonwealth Coast Conference Semifinals with a 2-0 win over Gordon College Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks were challenged throughout the game by the eighth-seeded Fighting Scots. Early in the game, Though Roger Williams held a 12-3 advantage in shots in the first half, Gordon made the Hawks work for its offensive opportunities, challenging balls in the midfield and on the sidelines.

It wouldn't be until the 28th minute when the Hawks found their way onto the scoreboard. Noelle Marston (Kingston, Mass.) dumped a header in the low right corner of the net off of a Maddy Howard (Medfield, Mass.) corner kick to put RWU up 1-0.

In the second half, Howard would add a score of her own in the 64th minute, taking advantage of a loose ball in the middle of the box. Gordon keeper Kari Christenson (Standish, Maine) punched out a cross attempt by the Hawks, but was unable to recover in time to get back in net. The Gordon defense and Hawk offense clashed in the box trying to get to the ball. It would be Howard who would come away with the shot and the score to give RWU a two-goal lead.

Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, Vt.) nearly got the Fighting Scots on the board in the 83rd minute, fighting through the Hawk defense with the ball and getting off an open shot. Yet she struck a little too aggressive as the ball sailed over the net. That would be the last major opportunity for Gordon to score as RWU earned the win.

Kelsey McGee (Kings Park, N.Y.) made five saves for the Hawks in the win, while Christenson stopped three shots in the loss.

Roger Williams (15-4-0) will host  the fourth-seeded University of New England Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. UNE defeated #5 Salve Regina University 4-1 earlier in the day. Gordon concludes the season with an overall record of 10-8-1.
