Box Score
BRISTOL, R.I. – Bowdoin College held off a late run by the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball to win 74-71 Saturday afternoon and earn the 2010 RWU/Courtyard by Marriott Tip-Off Championship. Medgar Evers earned third place via a 72-63 victory over Springfield College earlier in the day.
Bowdoin's Will Hanley (New Canaan, Conn.), who was named Tournament MVP, finished with 18 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks. Teammate Maximillian Staiger (West Caldwell, N.J.) also earned all-tournament honors while going two points and four blocks. Justin Nowell (Cos Cob, Conn.) scored 15 points and handed out two assists in the game.
Roger Williams' Taylor Petruccelli (Stratford, Conn.) finished with a game-high 26 points with ten rebounds en route to being named to the all-tournament team. Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) had nine points, four rebounds, and four assists for the Hawks and also was named all-tournament. Matt Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) scored nine points with six boards.
Roger Williams led for a majority of the game, taking a 40-34 lead into the break before the Polar Bears came back in the second half, eventually taking the lead on a three-pointer by Ryan O'Connell (Ipswich, Mass.) to make it 47-46 with 12:55 to play. The Hawks took a brief one-point lead (53-52) at the 9:23 mark on four consecutive free throws before Bowdoin regained the advantage.
The Hawks had an opportunity to send the game into overtime in the final minute of the game. With 15 seconds to play, Petruccelli hit the first, but missed the back end of a double bonus free throw. Yet on the ensuing Bowdoin rebound, he was able to force a tie-up and regain possession for the Hawks. RWU was not able to get a three-point shot up, as a Hanley block and rebound in the paint solidified the win for Bowdoin.
In the consolation game, four players scored in double figures for Medgar Evers, including 16 for James Gilmore (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 15 for all-tournament Cougar Robert Johnson (Brooklyn, N.Y.), 13 for Marlon McGlashin (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and ten for Jovan Deare (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
All-Tournament selection Matt Cavalieri (West Warwick, R.I.) scored a game-high 19 points with seven rebounds for Springfield, Teammate Darvis Rankins (Boston, Mass.) and Ryan Coburn (West Warwick, R.I.) finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively, with Coburn adding seven boards, three blocks, and three steals.
Despite committing 25 turnovers, Medgar Evers capitalized on a strong shooting day, going 25-of-43 from the field for a 58.1 percent clip, including a 13-of-20 (.650) performance in the first half. Conversely, Springfield only shot 38.4 percent from the field, while the Cougars' bench outscored the Pride's reserves 24-8.
Going into the second half tied at 30, the Cougars trailed for most of the early part of the second half. Yet a cold spell for the Pride sealed their fate, as Springfield missed all of its field goals over the final 6:42. Medgar Evers closed the game out on a 16-6 run over that stretch to turn a one 56-57 deficit into a nine-point win.
