NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team staved off a furious 21-to-4 second-half run by Connecticut College to trim a 52-31 deficit to hold on for a 65-57 win.
The cut the game to just a five point margin with 3:33 remaining but the Hawks maintained the lead for the win. The visiting Hawks improve to 3-1 with the victory while the Camels slip to 1-2.
Junior Gary Madison (Waterbury, Conn.) and freshman Matt Couture (Auburn, N.H.) scored 13 points each to lead the Hawks in the victory. James LeCardi (Fair Haven, N.J.) chipped in with nine points and four assists for the visitors.
Connecticut College sophomore Boris Jeremic (Rijeka, Croatia) and freshman Taylor Hanson (Saint Paul, Minn.) both had 14 points to lead all scorers. Jeremic was 4-for-5 from three-point distance and added five boards for the hosts. Hanson hauled in a game-high eight rebounds and was 6-for-9 from the field in an impressive home debut.
LeCardi and Couture netted back-to-back three pointers during a scoring surge that vaulted the visitors out to a 53-31 advantage with 14:09 remaining in regulation. But the Camels stormed back with some pressing defense and timely shooting to keep it close.
Jeremic knocked down a three from the top of the key with 5:11 remaining to cap a 9-0 run, closing the margin to 57-47. Freshman Jethro Anilus (Stamford, Conn.) used a high screen from Pete Banos (Trumbull, Conn.) to can another triple with 3:33 remaining that pulled the Camels to within five.
The Camels continued to pressure and got to within four points when Anilus assisted Hanson in the lane on a back door cut with 28 seconds left to make it a 61-57 contest.
But the Hawks were able to put the game away on the foul line and escaped New London with the eight-point win.
