Poor shooting hurts Men’s Basketball in loss to Wesleyan

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – A lackluster shooting night by the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team allowed the visiting Cardinals of Wesleyan University to come away with a 62-38 win Tuesday evening.

The Hawks were held to a season-low 20.7 shooting percentage on the night, including a 2-for-22 performance from three-point range. Prior to the game, the Hawks had not shot below 42% in the young season and had not shot under 30% in a game since January 28, 2010.

Conversely, Wesleyan shot 44.4 percent in the game, aided largely in part by a 15-for-29 effort (51.7%) in the second half.

Both teams struggled to shoot the ball in the first half, with the Cardinals going 9-for-25 from the field (36%) and Roger Williams only hitting five of their 26 attempts (19.2%). As a result, the first frame was a low scoring affair, as Wesleyan entered the break with a slim 25-19 lead.

In the second half, Wesleyan's scoring began to pick up, with Shasha Brown (Harlem, N.Y.) scoring 14 of his game-high 16 points in the period. The Hawks were able to bring the deficit to within four thanks to a Taylor Petruccelli (Stratford, Conn.) jumper at the 16:23 mark, yet Wesleyan responded with a 15-2 run over the next eight minutes to make it a 46-29 game an essentially put the game out of the Hawks' reach.

Brown added seven assists and five rebounds to go along with his 16 points for Wesleyan. Glen Thomas (Washington, D.C.) finished with four points and 12 boards, while Mike Callaghan (Madison, Conn.) contributed 11 points and seven rebounds. Jason Mendell (Bedford, N.Y.) also chipped in with 11 points.

The Hawks' reserves contributed solidly, with Gary Madison (Waterbury, Conn.) leading the Hawks in scoring with nine points off the bench, while Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) scored six points with nine rebounds. Matt Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) finished with eight points and six boards, with Travis O'Dell (Brunswick, Maine) going for five points and four boards in his first start of the year.

Roger Williams (5-2) heads out to Connecticut Thursday for a 5:30 p.m. game against Coast Guard Academy. Wesleyan (5-3) takes on Gordon College on the road Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
