Men's Basketball bounces back with win over Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, CONN. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team shot 58.8 percent from 3-point range, making 10 of 17 attempts for a 66-61 win over the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Thursday evening in a non-conference game.

The Hawks, who improved to 6-2, made just two of 22 from 3-point range in a loss on Tuesday, but hit seven of 12 in the first half and three of five from 3-point range in the second half.

Senior Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and junior Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) each finished with a team-high 11 points. Fava also finished with a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.

Coast Guard led 20-9 in the opening ten minutes and the Bears led 32-24 with 4:16 left in the opening half before sophomore Matt Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers and Roger Williams scored ten of the final 12 points of the half for a 36-34 lead.

Roger Williams shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the opening half (14-27) while the Bears were 14 of 28 in the opening stanza.

The Hawks took the lead for good on bucket by senior Travis O'Dell (Brunswick, Maine) with 8:11 left 54-53, which began a 9-0 run as Roger Williams took a 61-53 lead with 5:04 remaining in the game.

Roger Williams led 64-41 when Fava made a pair of free throws with 11 seconds left to ice the game.

Senior Jevon James led Coast Guard with 16 points, while sophomore Greg Marshall and senior Adam Radtke each added 13 points in the loss. Sophomore Jimmy Knudsen had nine points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Bears, who drop to 5-4 at the semester break.

The Hawks shot 49 percent from the field (24-49) while the Bears were 26 of 59 (44.1 percent), but made just two of ten from 3-point range. Roger Williams held a 33-28 edge in rebounds.

Roger Williams will take on the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
