BRISTOL, R.I. - The Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team picked up their second win in three days with a 3-0 triumph over Colby-Sawyer College Saturday afternoon. Alexa Maher (Hopewell, N.J.), Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) and Laurin Pendleton (Southwick, Mass.) netted first-half goals to give the Hawks their fourth consecutive TCCC victory on the season.
Though the Chargers kicked the game off, it was Roger Williams who had most of the early possession. Just over a minute in, Noel had a shot from close range that whistled past the left-hand post. Two minutes later, a throw-in from the right side caused problems in the Colby-Sawyer penalty box, but goalkeeper Shalyn Spencer (Natick, Mass.) was there to claim it before any Roger Williams players could finish it off.
However, the first goal would arrive just past the ten-minute mark. Kristen Metcalf (Londonderry, N.H.) sent a low, bouncing ball across the field just outside the box. Maher got her foot to it, sending a rising volley that caromed in off the crossbar past a hapless Spencer for a 1-0 RWU lead.
With 12:47 left in the first half, Roger Williams struck again. Maher sent a long ball up the right flank that Pendleton, the hat-trick hero of Wednesday's 5-0 victory over Colby-Sawyer, latched onto. Pendleton held off two defenders before cutting into the box and finding Noel, who made no mistake from six yards to slot the ball into the net.
Less than four minutes later, the Hawks got their third and final goal on the day. Maher was again involved, curling an in-swinging corner kick in from the right side. Pendleton was in the box in prime position, leaping above everyone and sending a reverse header into the net for a 3-0 advantage with 8:57 remaining in the first half.
The game became more of a midfield battle in the second half. Though the Chargers sent a few dangerous balls into the box, including a corner with under a minute left that RWU goalkeeper Kristen Darling (Weymouth, Mass.) caught, the Hawks were able to maintain the clean sheet for the 3-0 win.
“The win is nice,” Roger Williams coach Abi Jackson said. “Overall, I think we did a good job. We've got Anna Maria coming up next. We're taking it a game at a time. I'm pleased with the play of the underclassmen. We've still got some tactical things to work on, but overall I think we're starting to come together.”
Kelsey McGee (Kings Park, N.Y.) finished and two saves for RWU in the win while Darling stopped one shot in relief of McGee. Spencer ended the game with four saves for the Chargers.
Roger Williams (5-3-0, 4-0-0 TCCC) are next in action on Wednesday at Anna Maria College at 4:00 p.m., while Colby-Sawyer (2-3-2, 1-2-1 TCCC) play next on Wednesday as well, hosting Endicott College at 4:00 p.m.
