Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The RWU Women's Volleyball team earned its 14th win of the season and remains undefeated in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with its 3-1 victory Wednesday night over the visiting Gulls of Endicott College. RWU senior Jill Hurd (Sunapee, N.H.) tallied a season-high 30 digs in the contest and established a new RWU record for most digs in a career with 1,461.

In front of a raucous crowd of more than 250 students celebrating Coca-Cola Hawks Pride Day, RWU improved to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in the TCCC, while Endicott fell to 11-6 and 3-1 in the TCCC. The Gulls took the first set, 25-22, before RWU swept the next three, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22.

RWU fell behind early in set one, calling a timeout down 11-6. The Gulls maintained their pressure extending their lead to 20-13 before RWU began a late comeback. Junior Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.) served four-straight points to force Endicott into a timeout, ahead 23-20, before Endicott junior Elyse Barbour (Greenville, R.I.) eventually ended the set with one of her six kills on the night.

The Hawks rebounded well in the second game behind strong serving from sophomore Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) who rattled off eight-straight points to give RWU the 14-5 lead. The Hawks extended its lead to 20-10 on a kill in the middle from senior Rebekah Dion (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who finished the match with a single-match career-high 19 kills. Her .457 hitting percentage also led all players in the game as she recorded just three errors on 35 swings.

The 25-17 victory sent the two teams to intermission knotted at one set apiece while the fans enjoyed a serving contest with free t-shirts and pizza giveaways among the prizes.

RWU picked-up right where it left off in the third set, jumping out to an early 8-2 lead before Endicott junior Sarah Allshouse (Berthoud, Colo.) served four points to force RWU into a timeout. Hawks freshman Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) scored one of her 12 kills on the night right out of the timeout before an Endicott ball handling error and a service ace from sophomore Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) put the Hawks ahead by four. RWU extended its lead to seven at 21-14 before taking the set in the end on a kill by junior Natasha Sopchak (Rhinebeck, N.Y.).

The fourth set was tight from the start before back-to-back kills from Twarog and another by Luczynski gave RWU the 9-5 lead. Endicott chipped away at the lead before senior Amy Grigg (Vernon, Conn.) scored a kill to tie the set at 13-13. An RWU hitting error followed by a kill from Brittany Phillips (Sudbury, Mass.), who finished with a team-high 12 kills on the night, gave the Gulls a two-point edge.

The back-and-forth battle continued with RWU siding out and sophomore Kelsee Loche (Millis, Mass.) serving three points to give RWU a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the way. Endicott called timeout down 21-17, but could not stop the momentum as RWU finished the set with 19 kills, earning 25-22 victory.

Lebowitz led all players with a season-high 44 assists on the night, while Allshouse tallied 22 for the Gulls. She also registered 15 digs, five shy of Endicott's sophomore libero Ashley Norley (Sudbury, Mass.) who posted a team-high 20 digs. RWU finished the match hitting .190 as a team, while Endicott registered a team hitting percentage of .090.

RWU continues its conference play Saturday, hosting Salve Regina University and Colby-Sawyer College at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. Endicott also remains in TCCC action Saturday hosting Wentworth Institute of Technology at 12:30 and Western New England College at 4 p.m.
