SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Despite owning a 20-7 advantage in shots, the Springfield College women's soccer team came up short in it's season opener, falling to Roger Williams, 1-0, on Saturday evening in the Springfield College Invitational.
With the win, Roger Williams will now take on Eastern Connecticut at 7:15 on Sunday evening. Eastern Connecticut edged Westfield State, 1-0, in the day's other contest. The Invitational's other matchup will feature Westfield State and Springfield, who will play at 5:00 pm.
Springfield wasted no time pouring on the offensive pressure, and nearly scored in the opening minutes, however Katie Mantie's (Wallingford, Conn.) shot found the crossbar just 1:48 into the contest. SC was unable to find the back of the net in the opening half despite owning a 7-3 advantage in shots.
Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.) put the Hawks on top in the 67th minute as she lofted a shot over Springfield's keeper, Erin Greenstein (Framingham, Mass.), who was off her line challenging the attack. Maddy Howard (Medfield, Mass.) was credited with the assist as her pass from just inside the midline found Noel by herself outside the box.
The Pride nearly knotted the game at one but Brittany Collins (Vernon, Conn.) one-on-one bid with just over 11 minutes remaining was snuffed out by goalie Kelsey McGee (Kings Park, N.Y.).
McGee picked up the win as she made 12 saves on the night en route to earning the shutout. Greenstein, in just her second career start, took the loss as she made a pair of saves.
