Wentworth gives Men’s Basketball first conference loss of the year

BOSTON, Mass. – A strong first-half surge by Wentworth Institute of Technology helped give the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team its first loss of the 2010-11 Commonwealth Coast Conference season, as the Hawks fell 46-64 Saturday afternoon.

With the score tied at four apiece less than four minutes into the game, the Leopards mounted an 18-4 run over the next four minutes to take a 22-8 lead. Wentworth would eventually take a 33-10 lead in the period, en route to a 39-21 halftime score.

In the second half, the Leopards maintained a lead of at least 20 points throughout most of the beginning of the period. The Hawks attempted a comeback, with a free throw by Taylor Petruccelli (Stratford, Conn.) bringing the Hawks to within 13 (50-37) with under seven minutes to play, but RWU could never bring the deficit under double digits. Wentworth held on to take the 18-point win.

Mike Engemann (Red Bank, N.J.) led the Hawks with 13 points off the bench, along with seven rebounds. Petruccelli nearly turned in a double-double, finishing with eight points and ten rebounds. Corey Fava (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) added four points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Three Leopards scored in double figures, including Adam Dombrowski (Dunstable, Mass.) with a game-high 20, Keenan Burke-Pitts (Auburn, Mass.) with 16, and Sam Herrick (Duxbury, Mass.) with a double-double, going for 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Roger Williams (10-5, 2-1 TCCC) heads up to Gordon College Wednesday for an 8:00 p.m. matchup, while Wentworth (8-6, 3-0 TCCC) will be at Western New England College Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
