HARTFORD, Conn. – The Roger Williams University Hawks Wrestling team earned a split Sunday in Hartford, Conn., where they defeated the host Trinity Bantams, 22-16, after dropping their match against Wesleyan University, 26-12.
In the first match of the day, RWU and Wesleyan were separated by just one point with four bouts remaining, but a major decision at 125 and an RWU forfeit at 133 gave the Cardinals a comfortable 20-9 lead. A 6-5 decision for freshman Michael Forlenza (Montville, N.J.) moved RWU to 12 before the Cardinals ended the match with a pin.
Against Trinity, RWU jumped out to a 16-0 lead after four bouts, including a major decision win for freshman Collin Crowell (Hampstead, N.H.) and a win by fall for sophomore Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.). Trinity rebounded with back-to-back wins before forfeiting the 125 match while both teams forfeited the 133 match to ensure the Hawks' victory with the score 22-7. The Bantams finished strong however, taking a 7-1 decision at 141 and a win by fall at 4:38 in the 149 bout.
In the third match of the day, Wesleyan defeated Trinity 36-3. Wesleyan, ranked #3 in New England, improves to 6-2-1, while the Hawks, ranked #7 in the region, move to 3-7. Trinity is now 0-2.
