BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Wesleyan University captured the New England Wrestling Association "Headlock for Hunger" Dual Meet Championship on Sunday afternoon as the second-seeded Cardinals knocked off number five seed Plymouth State University, 24-12, in the title match. RWU posted a 2-1 record to secure ninth place among the 14 competitors.
RWU fell just two points shy of advancing into the championship round after its first-round match against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. The Hawks dropped the match 23-21, despite wins by five Hawks, including a win by fall for Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.) in the 174 bout. Parcel finished the day 3-0 with three pins. Two majors and two pins for Coast Guard in the first six bouts were too much for RWU to overcome, leaving the Hawks with a bye through the second round.
In the third round, RWU faced Norwich University, defeating the Cadets 34-6. After dropping both the 125 and 133 bouts, the Hawks won each of the remaining eight matches to advance into the consolation championship against Trinity College.
RWU moved ahead 12-0 after a forfeit win at 125 and a win by fall for Derek Juchnik (Newcastle, Maine) at 133. Trinity bounced back to take the next two matches, including a pin at 149 before the teams traded decisions at 157 and 165. RWU took control from that point, winning three of the final four matches.
The 14 Division III New England wrestling teams that competed in the tournament also held a food drive to help support three local area food pantries; the Bridgewater Food Pantry, Father Bill's and MainSpring House in Brockton and My Brother's Keeper in Easton.
