Men’s Basketball gives Colby-Sawyer first TCCC loss

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team rallied from a halftime deficit to defeat Colby-Sawyer, 70-64 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks improve to 12-7 overall and 4-3 in TCCC action. Colby-Sawyer drops to 10-8 overall and suffers their first conference loss to fall to 6-1. 

Roger Williams junior Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) led all players with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Tom Rafael (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) had 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Senior Travis O'Dell (Brunswick, Maine) was the third Hawk in double-figures with 10 points.

Colby-Sawyer was led by junior Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) who scored 16 points. Freshman Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) added 15 points. Junior James Tobin (Brookline, N.H.) and sophomore Corey Willis (Easton, Mass.) contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Trailing 40-25 with 2:47 left in the first half, the Hawks went on a 9-0 run thanks to a pair of three pointers and three free throws. Colby-Sawyer made five of eight three pointers in the first to lead 40-34 at the break.

Colby-Sawyer continued to hold a lead deep into the second half before the Hawks tied the game at 60-60 on a Matt Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) free throw. Tom Rafael then hit a three pointer to give Roger Williams their first lead since 1-0 at 63-60. A pair of free throws and a jumper from Flanagan and another three by Rafael clinched the 70-64 road win for the Hawks.

Roger Williams shot the ball well in the second, while holding the Chargers to six field goals and 23% shooting.

Roger Williams was 10-20 from beyond the arc and held a 23-6 edge in bench points.

Colby-Sawyer hosts Endicott on Wednesday, February 2 at 7:30 pm, while Roger Williams will also play on Wednesday when they host Salve Regina at 8:00 pm.
