BRISTOL, R.I. – An early goal helped propel the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team to a 1-0 win Saturday afternoon over Endicott College.
Noelle Marston (Kingston, Mass.) beat Endicott keeper Katie Donnelly (Madison, Conn.) to a left-side pass from Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.) 2:32 into the game. Donnelly could not corral the ball, allowing Marston to put in the shot into the empty net.
From there, the Hawks would hold on to their 1-0 lead and maintain the shutout en route to the win. The victory improves the Hawks' record to 6-5-1 on the season while moving up to third place in the Commonwealth Coast Conference with a 4-1-0 record. Endicott gets bumped down to fourth in the CCC and now moves to 7-5-0 (3-2-0 CCC).
Although Endicott outshot the Hawks 19-5 in the game, the Gulls were unable to put any shots in the net. Hawk keeper Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) stayed busy in net with six saves in the game.
Endicott's Vanessa Caruccio (Winthrop, Mass.) had all three of her shots on the day stopped by Jaques in the contest.
Donnelly made one save in the game for Endicott in the tough loss.
“We have been playing well all season and today we played for 90 minutes,” said Head Coach Tim Moody. “We scored early which put us in a good position. It allowed us to dictate how the game was going to be played. We limited them to only a few shots on goal and maybe only one quality opportunity. If you play organized and have a game plan you can win games like we did today.
“We had good performances from everybody day who stepped on the pitch. We have been training well and are beginning to apply ourselves in game situations. The entire squad was prepared physically and mentally for this conference game. We made good choices throughout the game and this was part of our success. The team understands what we are trying to do and we believe we will peak at the right time of the year.
“We won the game; that was the most important thing we wanted to achieve, but we also were able to control the game. So all in all it was a great day for the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer program.”
Roger Williams travels to Western New England and Endicott hosts Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday.
