Women’s Soccer claims 2nd straight CCC Championship in double OT

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – A clutch goal in the 106th minute by Katie Fusaro (Hopkinton, Mass.) gave the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team a 1-0 double overtime victory over Endicott College Saturday afternoon and gave the Hawks their second straight Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship.

In the second overtime, the Hawks' Maddy Howard (Medfield, Mass.) sent a long pass from just inside midfield to the right side, over an Endicott defender and hitting Fusaro in stride. Fusaro took the ball into the box and fired a shot over the Gull keeper and into the left corner to break a scoreless tie and punch the Hawks' ticket back to the NCAA Tournament.

Fusaro nearly ended the game five minutes earlier, as she received a pass on the right side similar to the one she would score on later. She put one past Endicott's Natalie Wyrsch (Dover, N.H.) but found the left post rather than the back of the net, keeping the game alive for Endicott.

Endicott had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 84th minute, with a shot by Nicole Fournier (Milford, Mass.) on an open net with the Hawks' Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) off the net. Yet a heads-up stop by Tory Benoit (Shrewsbury, Mass.) kept the Gulls off the board to ultimately send the game into extra periods.

Jaques finished the game with four saves for Roger Williams, picking up her seventh shutout of the season. Wyrsch also stopped four shots in the game for Endicott in the loss.

Roger Williams (14-6-1) finds out its region and opponent for the NCAA Tournament on Monday, while Endicott closes out the season with a record of 13-8-0.
