Wrestling falls to Johnson and Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Roger Williams University wrestling team suffered a 28-12 setback against intra-state rival Johnson and Wales in a Pilgrim League contest at the Harborside Recreation Center on Sunday afternoon.

The action got under way at 174 pounds with JWU junior co-captain Colin Lenhardt (Hayes, Va.), the ninth ranked wrestler in the nation, recording a win via pin fall in time of 4:40. Roger Williams answered at 184 pounds with a pin fall victory by junior Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.), tying the match at 6-6. Roger Williams went ahead 9-6 on a 7-0 victory by junior Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.). JWU regained their lead when junior co-captain Humphrey Swift (Danbury, Conn.) notched a victory with a pin in a time of 4:35 at heavyweight to put the team up 12-9. The Wildcats extended their lead to 15-9 with a 7-5 victory by junior Joe Pronk (Marshfield, Mass.) and took the 18-9 lead on a 9-3 win by senior John Donaleski (Belleville, N.J.) at 133 pounds. A 9-4 victory at 141 pounds by junior TJ Webster (Markham, Ill.) put JWU up 21-9. RWU closed the gap to 21-12 with a 4-0 win at 149 pounds by sophomore Conor Hayes (Old Bridge, N.J.), but that would be as close as the Hawks would get with JWU freshman Matt Ross (Miller Place, N.Y.) taking a 9-0 win at 157 pounds and the Wildcats freshman Frank Marotti (Fairfield, N.J.) posting a 9-7 victory at 165 pounds to lead JWU to the 28-12 victory.

With the win Johnson & Wales remains a perfect 5-0 in dual matches with a 2-0 record in the Pilgrim League this season while Roger Williams falls to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in league play. The Hawks return to action with the Williams College Tournament on January 7.
