Men’s Basketball rolls to win over Curry

Box Score

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team grabs sole possession of third place in The Commonwealth Coast Conference with an 84-59 win over Curry College Wednesday evening.

The victory for the Hawks proved to be an important win in light of tonight's games around the conference. Endicott 's 71-65 win over New England College and Gordon's 69-56 victory over the University of New England were two of six games this evening that pushed five teams in the conference to a tied for fourth in the conference with a 7-5 record. Roger Williams holds a one-game cushion in the conference, entering the regular season finale with a TCCC record of 8-4.

The Hawks enjoyed one of the best offensive outputs of the year, with the 84 points second-best on the season only to a 90-point effort against Rhode Island College back on January 5. Their 27 field goals made is a season high, while their .540 field goal percentage (27-54) is the team's third-best mark of the year.

The Hawk defense continued to stifle the opposition, as the Colonels shot 32.4 percent (24-74) in the game. This marks the sixth straight Hawk opponent to shoot under 40 percent in a game.

Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) knocked down a jumper inside on the first Hawk possession, beginning a wire-to-wire lead for Roger Williams. Curry kept it close in the early minutes, with Michael Connery (Narragansett, R.I.) knocking down a three at the 11:51 mark to make it a 15-18 Colonel deficit. Yet Roger Williams responded with a 13-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 14-point lead and eventually go into the break leading 37-25.

In the second half, Sedale Jones (Pittsfield, Mass.) tried to keep the Colonels in the game, knocking his first four three-point attempts of the period, all of which with a hand in his face. Yet the Hawk advantage proved to be too much to overcome, with Roger Williams' lead never dropping below double-digits in the period.

Four Hawks scored in double figures, including Taylor Petruccelli (Stratford, Conn.) with 15 and seven rebounds, Matt Grossbard (Pearl River, N.Y.) with 14, Flanagan with 13, and Matt Clifford (Norwood, Mass.) with 12. Flanagan also added six boards and four blocks.

Jones finished with a game-high 20 points for the Colonels. Howard Thompson (West Haven, Conn.) netted ten points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Michael Worrick (North Grafton, Mass.) added five points and five boards.

Roger Williams (16-8, 8-4 TCCC) closes out the season at home with a 3:00 p.m. contest on Saturday against Eastern Nazarene College. Curry (4-20, 2-10) ends the year at Endicott College on Saturday, also at 3:00 p.m.
