Cambi earns 100th career win in Hawks loss to Bridgewater State

BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Nick Cambi (Cohasset, Mass.), the 8th-ranked heavyweight wrestler in the nation, registered his 100th career victory Thursday night in a Pilgrim League match won by visiting Bridgewater State University, 34-7.

Cambi's victory was one of few bright spots for a Hawks team battling numerous injuries and illness Thursday as the Bears dominated the match. Beginning with the first bout at 157, the Bears jumped out to an early lead with Steve Ciaccio's (West Milford, N.J.) win by fall at 4:55 and the team never looked back. A 12-2 major decision win at 165 moved the score to 10-0.

In a tight 174 match RWU sophomore Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.) scored a takedown to take the 8-7 lead with six seconds remaining in the bout before senior Zach Bates (Leyden, Mass.) scored a reversal before the buzzer to earn the 9-8 win.

Sophomore Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.), wrestling at 184, was the only Hawk besides Cambi to score for RWU as he registered an 8-4 decision over junior Mike Fenner (Bergenfield, N.J.).

An RWU forfeit at 125 and a tech. fall at 133 increased Bridgewater State's lead to 27-7 before Jerry Joubert (Framingham, Mass.) won 6-4 and Sean Fields (Norwalk , Conn.) closed out the match with a 16-2 major decision.

Bridgewater improves to 3-0-1 in the Pilgrim league and 7-8-1 overall this season, while RWU falls to 1-2 in the Pilgrim League and 6-11 overall. Both teams return to action Saturday when the Bears host Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 2 p.m., while the Hawks finish Pilgrim League play hosting both the University of Southern Maine and Rhode Island College beginning at 12 Noon.
