DUDLEY, Mass. – The second-seeded Roger Williams University Men's Tennis team swept the doubles side en route to a 5-1 upset victory over top-seeded Nichols College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship at the Francis W. Robinson Courts Saturday.
The Hawks win their second title in three years after their fourth-straight appearance in the championship match and earn the TCCC's automatic bid in the NCAA Championships with a 17-6 record. Nichols sees its season end at 16-5.
Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) and Dan Kleitz (Wethersfield, Conn.) were 8-4 winners at top doubles before Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.) and Nicholas Hawvermale (Bethlehem, Conn.) posted an 8-3 win at the third doubles flight. Nichols' second doubles pair of Isiah Prosper (Manchester, N.H.) and Daniel Young (Washington Depot, Conn.) pulled close in their match, but fell to Kevin Erikson (Tolland, Conn.) and Spencer Withington (Plymouth, Mass.), 9-7.
Kleitz brought the Hawks within one point with his 6-0, 6-0 third singles victory before Drucker put the Bison on the board by defeating DeNunzio, 6-2, 6-4, at the top flight.
Wuhrmann rallied in his second set at sixth singles to force a third against Taylor Webster (Bristol, Conn.), and Prosper headed to a third set at the fifth flight against Withington after taking the first.
Meanwhile, Erikson clinched the match at second singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Steve Carella (Rocky Hill, Conn.).
The first round of the NCAA Championships is May 13-15 at sites yet to be determined.
