Volleyball tops Emmanuel 3-0

Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Women's Volleyball team improves to 4-2 with a win over the visiting Saints from Emmanuel College (2-3) by a score of 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-21) in a non-conference match-up in which the Hawks never trailed.

The Hawks scored the first five points of the match and would continue to dominate the first set behind an impressive 0.458 team hitting percentage, including 14 kills on 24 attempts.  Senior Marybeth Torpey (Quincy, Mass.) tallied five of her match-high 12 kills in the first set for Roger Williams.  The Hawk defense played a large part in the offensive success as they held the visitors to a 0.000 team hitting percentage.
The second set saw Roger Williams jump out to an early lead forcing an Emmanuel time out at 9-3 after a service ace by freshman Emily Werth (Cheshire, Conn.) who also added 8 digs in the match.  The Saints closed the gap to 18-14 but the Hawks would go on to score seven of the final nine points to finish off the set 25-16.

Once again, the Hawks exploded to a 4-0 lead.  However, the Saints rallied back to within one at 8-7 behind a run featuring three kills by Emmanuel senior Jenna Ross (Centerburg, Ohio).  Ross finished with a team-high nine kills for the Saints.  The Hawks would maintain a narrow lead for the remainder of the set, capping off the match with a 25-21 victory.

Sophomores Krystie Luczynski (Kensington, Conn.) and Holly Hancock (Tilton, N.H.) contributed nine kills apiece for Roger Williams while junior Abby Cunningham (Catasauqua, Pa.) added five kills as part of a .400 hitting percenatge.   The defense was anchored by junior libero Kelsee Loche's (Millis, Mass.) 14 digs as well as 8 digs by senior Marilu Gonzalez-Yanez (Los Angeles, Calif.).  Junior Emily Lebowitz (Coventry, Conn.) dished out 39 assists. 

For the Saints, senior setter Kathryne Olsen (Fairhaven, Mass.) dished out 10 assists while junior libero Yun-Ting Lee (Cambridge, Mass.) notched a
team-high 13 digs.

Roger Williams will host Rivier, NYU Polytechnic, and the University of New England in the RWU Invitational on Saturday, September 10.  Emmanuel returns to action on Friday evening at the Brandeis University Invitational in Waltham, Mass.
