Wrestling takes fifth at New England Duals

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Wrestling team claimed fifth place in the New England Dual Meet Championship Sunday evening.

The Hawks began the day with a 32-12 win over #12th-seeded Plymouth State, with six Hawks earning victories. The #4 seed Wesleyan University took a 27-10 decision over Roger Williams to put the Hawks in the consolation bracket. From there, the Hawks defeated #9 Bridgewater State 28-14, followed by a 23-18 win over #3 Rhode Island College.

Collin Crowell had a strong day for the Hawks, finishing 4-0 for the meet. He started with an 18-2 technical fall over James Tarpey of Plymouth State, then defeated Richard Leuchter of Wesleyan via tech fall as well (16-1). Crowell would go on to earn a major decision (10-1) over Gene Deary of Bridgewater State and a technical fall over Robert Sotelo of Rhode Island College.

"The New England Duel Meet is always a fun tournament," said Co-Head Coach Jon Egan. "After a bit of a flat start, it was great to see guys respond and rise to the occasion. We wrestled as a team and did a lot of good things. Beating #3 RIC was definitely where we wanted to finish the day and we did it as a team and by winning a lot of little battles and scraps. The focus on these last five weeks is staying healthy and picking up the intensity. I have high expectations for my guys and can't wait to see us reach our goals."

Roger Williams takes on Bridgewater State University on Wednesday.
