BRISTOL, R.I. – Wesleyan University snapped a four-game unbeaten streak by the Roger Williams University Women's Soccer team, defeating the Hawks by a 2-1 score on Wednesday afternoon. Wesleyan improves to 5-5-1 on the season, while the Hawks drop to 6-3-2.
This is the third all-time matchup between the two teams, with Wesleyan coming away with 2-1 wins in all three contests.
Wesleyan's Beth Alexion (Brooklyn, N.Y.) kick-started the Cardinal offense in the 37th minute, capitalizing on a loose ball in the box. Kerry Doyle (North Haven, Conn.) served up a corner kick from the left side, finding the foot of Kaylie Williams (Danville, Calif.). Williams put a shot that hit just underneath the cross bar, dropping the ball right in front of the goal. Alexion would then convert the short shot to give the Cardinals the lead.
Katy Hardt (Brookline, Mass.) would add to the Wesleyan lead in the 62nd minute, taking a pass from Laura Kurash (Voorhees, N.J.) and putting one in goal to give Wesleyan a 2-0 lead.
The Hawks managed to get on the board in the final minute, when a foul in the box gave the Hawks a penalty kick with one second to play. Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.) knocked in the shot to give RWU its first goal of the game, but there would not be enough time to finish the comeback.
Rachel Hobert (Chicago, Ill.) earned the win, making six saves in the first half. Jessica Tollman (Brookline, Mass.) played the second half for the Cardinals, stopping nine shots while allowing one goal.
Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) took the loss, allowing two goals with two saves.
Despite the loss, the Hawks' offense still managed to outshoot Wesleyan 24-9, including holding the Cardinals to only three shots in the second half.
Roger Williams heads to Gordon on Saturday for a noon matchup, while Wesleyan hosts Connecticut College next Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
