Women’s Soccer conference win streak snapped

Box Score WENHAM, Mass. — Gordon College handed the Roger Williams University Women' Soccer team its first loss in Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon.

The Fighting Scots were paced by two goals from senior captain Karina Scavo (Mount Sinai, N.Y.). With the win the Scots move to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in CCC play as the Hawks fall to 6-5-2 and 4-1-1 respectively.

The match began with strong back and forth play through the first 10 minutes, while both teams fought to create opportunities. Caitlin Nedde (Colchester, Vt.) started the scoring for the day with a goal on a breakaway in the 12th minute to give the Scots the early 1-0 lead.

As the half continued, Roger Williams proved to be a formidable opponent for the Scots, outshooting Gordon 7-4 in the first half. The Hawks got their first break when junior Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.) netted her sixth goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 with just over 15 minutes to play in the half.

That score would hold going in to the break and for much of the latter half. The second stanza evidenced just how evenly matched these teams were as they battled for the lead. It would be the Scots who pulled began to pull away though, as Scavo chipped a ball from Taylor McSherry (Wolcott, Conn.) over the Hawks' keeper's head from close range at 67:57. Then, just 42 seconds later, the Scots struck again as Scavo netted her second on the day from a free kick outside the area.

Despite a two-goal advantage, the pressure remained as the Scots fought to maintain their lead. Roger Williams mounted a comeback in the 84th minute when freshman Taylor Provost (Peabody, Mass.) scored off a Hawks corner to narrow the gap to one. The effort though, proved not enough as the final buzzer sounded with Gordon on top 3-2.

Both facing 12 shots, Scots' netminder Kari Christensen (Standish, Maine) finished the day with seven saves, while Stephanie Jacques (Burlington, Vt.) turned away five.

The Scots return to field on Wednesday, October 17 as they travel to Curry College for a 6:30 p.m. start, and the Hawks host Western New England at 4:00 p.m. on the same day.
