Bristol, R.I. – In front of a capacity homecoming crowd Roger Williams shut out the University of New England in a 1-0 contest. The loss drops the UNE Nor 'easterners to 7-10 overall and 5-3-0 in Commonwealth Coast Conference play while the RWU Hawks improve to 9-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in the CCC action.
The event began with a Senior Day acknowledgement of Captain Erynne Landry (Lewiston, Maine) for her contributions both on and off the field throughout her career at RWU.
The Hawks controlled much of the action throughout the game and led the statistical battle in shots (16-5) and corner kicks (7-0). The Hawks created pressure in all areas of field resulting in turnovers and a consistent possession advantage in the contest.
At 42:56 in the first half junior, Amy Cripps (Exeter, R. I.) scored her first goal of the season and the only goal of the game on a corner kick assist from Katie Lydon (Riverside, R.I.).
The Nor 'easterners turned the statistical table on the Hawks in leading in fouls (11-1) and saves (6-0). Stephanie Jacques (Burlington, Vt.) was not tested in goal for the Hawks do to an outstanding defensive effort from Junior, Jessica Reade (North Yarmouth, Maine) in midfield and center back, Tory Benoit (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
Coach Tim Moody commented, “We were the more dangerous team today and controlled the tempo of the game. We would have liked to finish on a few more possessions but we scored enough to win and that is the main objective.”
Both the Hawks and the Nor 'easterners are back in action on Tuesday, October 23 with UNE at Eastern Nazarene for a 4:30pm game and RWU at Springfield for a 7:00pm start time.
