Wheaton upends Men’s Basketball

Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton College posted a decisive 73-51 victory over the Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium.

Sophomore forward Ryan Clinesmith (New York, N.Y./The Hill School) led four players in double-figures with 21 points and four rebounds. Clinesmith shot 8-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-7 from the free throw line to produce his third 20-point game of the season. Sophomore forward Mike O'Loughlin (Milford, N.H./Milford) collected 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting (3-for-5 from three-point range), seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Senior forward Brian Johnson (Roxbury, Mass./Brimmer and May School) had 12 points and seven caroms while sophomore guard Jaycob Morales (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) added 11 points, five steals, three rebounds and one assist.

Junior point guard Will Bayliss (Manchester, N.H./Tilton School) dished out a game-high six assists and also notched six rebounds, three steals and two points.

For Roger Williams, senior forward Mike Engemann (Red Bank, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) contributed a team-high 12 points and sophomore Joseph Henry (Medway, Mass./Medway) recorded 11 points. Freshman forward Jared Lewis (Peabody, Mass./Malden Catholic) compiled nine points, a team-high seven boards and one steal.

The Lyons finished the contest shooting 53.8-percent from the floor (61.5% in the first half), 37.5-percent from long distance and 73.3-percent at the line. The Hawks shot 35.3-percent overall, 29.0-percent from three-point range and 75.0-percent from the free throw line.

Wheaton outscored the visitors 38-12 in the paint, 19-14 off of turnovers and 10-0 in second chance points. Both teams tied (10-10) in transition points while Roger Williams outscored the hosts in bench points, 25-10.

Senior guard James LeCardi (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) gave the Hawks their only lead of the contest, 5-4, at the 17:44 mark with a three-point basket on an assist from sophomore forward Adam Cook (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan). The Lyons took control of the game from there on out with a 21-4 run that spanned eight minutes and 43-seconds.

Morales, who scored nine points total during the stretch, capped the scoring run with a pair of back-to-back steals that both led to fast break buckets. Clinesmith aided the offense with four points, O'Loughlin buried one 3-pointer at 13:54, Johnson canned a pair of free throws and senior guard Scott Faucher (Lebanon, N.H./Kimball Union Academy) swished a three-pointer at the 9:42 mark.

The Lyons led by as many as 27 points with 1:22 remaining in the game to clinch their first win against the Hawks since their 75-55 victory over Roger Williams on December 4, 2008.

Wheaton (6-3, 0-0 NEWMAC), who snapped a three-game losing streak with its win this afternoon, returns to action on January 3, on the road, against Rhode Island College at 7:30 p.m. Roger Williams (3-4, 1-2 CCC) visits Coast Guard on Tuesday, December 11 at 7 p.m.
