Wrestling Defeats Johnson & Wales

BRISTOL, R.I. – Wrestling defeats Johnson & Wales University (JWU) in Pilgrim League showdown of the top two ranked teams in the New England Wrestling Association.

The #25 nationally ranked and #1 regionally ranked Hawks improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league and the #2 regionally ranked Wildcats fall to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in league.

JWU's Blake McNulty (Framingham, Mass.) got the Wildcats off to a fast start by a major decision and posting four points for his team at the 285 weight class.

Roger Williams rallied back at the 125 lbs., 133 lbs., and 141 lbs. matches with Anthony D'Anton (Toms River, N.J.), Dante Porrazzo (East Hanover, N.J.), and James Carroll (Needham, Mass.) earning hard fought close decisions to give the Hawks a 9-4 lead in the team score.

JWU's Joey Gaccione (Highpoint, N.J.) stopped the Hawks momentum earning a decision and cutting the lead to 9-7.

RWU's Francisco Colom (Ridgefield, N.J.) gutted out a one point escape to earn a pivotal decision and push the Hawks lead back to 5 points.

Collin Crowell (Hampstead, N.H.) followed with a dominating performance just missing a major decision and pushing the team lead to 15-7 on the meet scoreboard.

JWU's Dylen Seybolt (Ridge, N.J.) put the Wildcats right back in the meet with a pin that cut the lead to 15-13.

In the 184 lb. match RWU's Shane Parcel (Pine Brook, N.J.) headed into the third period down two points and his teams two point lead in limbo. The nationally ranked Parcel rallied in the third period to win his match and give the Hawks a five point team lead heading into the final match up.

Philip Ernst (Succasunna, N.J.) closed the door on JWU's hopes of a comeback with an escape in the third period of his match to earn a 5-4 victory and push the team score to 21-13.

Coach Jon Egan commented on the meet, "I am very proud of these guys. It has been five years since we beat JWU and our guys dug deep to protect our ranking, our league record, and our house."

The Hawks will be back in action January 5th at 9:30 a.m. at the Scott Viera Invitational in Bristol, R.I..
