Salve Regina defeats Men’s Basketball on Senior Day

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball team fell to Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon in the final game of the 2011-12 regular season by a final score of 52-68.

With the loss, Roger Williams drops to 9-9 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference and 13-12 overall. The Hawks will be the #6 seed in the upcoming CCC Tournament and will travel to #3 seed Endicott on Tuesday for their quarterfinal matchup. Salve Regina, who has already clinched the top seed in the conference, improves to 15-3 in CCC play (17-8 overall) and will host #8 Gordon on Tuesday as well.

Prior to the start of the game, seniors Dan Weidmann (Wallingford, Conn.) and Pat Flanagan (Somerville, Mass.) were honored for their contributions to the Men's Basketball program over the course of their careers.

Salve Regina led from wire to wire in the contest, beginning with a three-point basket by Isiah Pringle. Pringle would go on to have a big first half, scoring 21 points in the frame including five three-pointers.

The Hawks pulled within four early on, with James LeCardi (Fair Haven, N.J.) putting in a layup to make it an 8-12 game, but the Seahawks would respond with an 11-0 run to take a 15-point lead. In the period, the Hawks went 8-of-24 from the field (33.3%) and went into the break trailing by a 19-38 margin.

In the second half, Salve Regina continued to maintain its dominant lead, going on top by as many as 29 in the period. Though the Hawks were able to get to the foul line in the half, shooting 13-of-16 at the line, the team still shot only 33.3% in the half (9-of-27).

Flanagan led the Hawks with 14 points and a pair of blocks. Mike Igoe (Lexington, Mass.) added 12 points and four rebounds off the bench. Mike Engemann (Red Bank, N.J.) had four points and four steals.

Pringle finished with a game-high 27 points. Ryan Birrell (Hope, R.I.) added ten points and three assists, while Jeff Bielefeld (Littleton, Mass.) went for eight points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.
