BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University opened up Commonwealth Coast Conference play Wednesday afternoon with a 9-0 win over Salve Regina University.
The win for the Hawks snaps a two-match skid and puts RWU at 2-5 on the season. Salve Regina continues to search for its first win, falling to 0-9.
Jeff DeNunzio (Barrington, R.I.) and Taylor Webster (Bristol, Conn.) paced the Hawks early with an 8-0 win over Colin Gunning (Norwell, Mass.) and Malcolm Marshall (Topsham, Maine) at #2 doubles. Jason Pacino (North Reading, Mass.) and Ryan Swanson (West Newbury, Mass.) followed suit with an 8-4 win at #1 against Aaron Isch (Tolland, Conn.) and Zachary Rosenfeld (Easton, Conn.). Kyle Bull (Pleasantville, N.Y.) and Spencer Withington (Plymouth, Mass.) grabbed the third win for RWU at #3.
At singles play, Swanson, Bull, and Jonathan Chandler (East Falmouth, Mass.) earned respective wins at #3, #5, and #6 via identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Pacino rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 over Marshall.
Though Rosenfeld was the only person to take a set at singles for the Seahawks, DeNunzio still came away with the 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 win at #1. Zack Bussiere (Colchester, Conn.) closed out the day with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at #2.
Roger Williams University heads to UMass-Dartmouth next Thursday while Salve Regina hosts Endicott on Saturday.
