Box Score BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University got back on the winning track Wednesday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Mount Ida College in non-conference action.
With the win, Roger Williams improves to 2-1-0 on the young season, while Mount Ida continues to search for its first win of the season, falling to 0-1-1.
The game was delayed 30 minutes due to heavy rain and thunder about an hour prior to the start. Once the game got underway, the clouds slowly shifted away and sunlight broke through in the final minutes of play.
The Hawks wasted little time putting a mark on the scoreboard. In the fourth minute, Mark Cassese (Taunton, Mass.) sent a long pass to Daniel Caruso (Tewksbury, Mass.) on the run. Caruso was able to outrun the Mustang defense and place a short chip over the goalie and into the middle of the net for the score.
In the final minute of the period, the Hawks nearly added another score on the board, when Mustang keeper Miguel Sanchez (Marlborough, Mass.) made a sliding attempt on a loose ball in the box, but could not hold on to it. The ball nearly rolled into the net, but A.J. Ricketts (Nantucket, Mass.) was able to kick the ball away before the ball went in.
Mount Ida almost tied the game in the 49th minute, when Steve MacDonald (Medford, Mass.) sent a long shot from the left side that sliced and just bounced off the right post
The Hawks would notch their second goal of the game in the 75th minute, when Kamali Webson (Bellingham, Mass.) put in a shot off of a corner kick by James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.).
That would be all the Hawks needed, as the defense held Mount Ida without a shot over the remainder of the game, allowing RWU to earn the shutout.
Tom Mangels (Garden City, N.Y.) earned his first career blank sheet and first career win, making six saves in the game. Sanchez took the loss in his season debut, stopping eight shots on the day.
Roger Williams hosts Rhode Island College on Saturday at 1:30, while Mount Ida travels to Albertus Magnus on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
