BRISTOL, R.I. – The Roger Williams University Men's Basketball snapped a five-game losing streak with a 71-66 win over Eastern Nazarene College Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference action.
Roger Williams nets its third conference win of the season, improving to 3-7 in the CCC and 6-11 overall. Eastern Nazarene has its win streak halted at seven and falls to 13-4 overall (7-3 CCC).
The win for the Hawks did not come easy, as the Hawks came back from an eight-point second half deficit to take the lead. Then late in the game, the Lions nearly erased a ten-point deficit with just over two minutes left.
Eastern Nazarene's Chima Ezeigbo (Roanoke, Va.) opened the second half with a short jumper to make it a 35-27 lead and giving the Lions their largest lead of the game. Roger Williams would then storm out on a 16-2 run to jump back on top by six (43-37) 14:23 left to play.
The next five minutes saw a tie and two lead changes before a Josh McCourt (Lincoln, R.I.) jumper put the Hawks back up 48-46. RWU built the lead up to ten on a Mike Igoe jumper with 4:41 for the squad's largest lead.
With 2:06 left and RWU on top 68-58, Eastern Nazarene mounted a furious comeback, with the Lions forcing three straight Hawk turnovers and getting baskets by Eric Lynch (Alpharetta, Ga.), Jaylen Owens (Johns Creek, Ga.), and Max Barbosa (Dorchester, Mass.) in an 8-0 run to bring the Lyons within two.
ENC had a chance to knot the game at 68, but a pair of missed free throws kept the lead in favor of the Hawks. Ryan Palumbo (Warwick, R.I.) would then sink both freebies after being fouled in the double bonus to help the Hawks hold on and secure the win.
Igoe led all scorers with a season-high 18 points with four rebounds. James LeCardi (Fair Haven, N.J.) added 13 points and two assists, while Palumbo finished with nine points, six boards, four assists, and five steals.
Owens finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and six assists for Eastern Nazarene, while Lynch finished with 13 points and seven rebounds. Ezeigbo added 11 points and three boards.
Roger Williams hosts Endicott next, while Eastern Nazarene takes on Wentworth, both games on Saturday afternoon.
